2009 Year in Review

A Year of Accomplishments

The past year was one of change and accomplishment at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin. Highlights included ranking 10th among academic medical centers nationwide; the one-year anniversary of the Clinical Cancer Center; achieving the nation’s highest survival rate in our kidney transplant program; and having more physicians on the “Best Doctors in America®” list than any other Wisconsin hospital.

Admissions Record
A record 121 patients were admitted to Froedtert Hospital on March 23. In fiscal year 2009, inpatient admissions totaled 26,113, outpatient visits totaled 568,352 and Emergency Department visits totaled 58,338.

Star Attraction
Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin is increasingly becoming a destination of choice for top physicians. In 2009, Doug Evans, MD, became Chairman of Surgery. Dr. Evans, formerly of the MD Anderson Cancer Center, is one of the country’s leading surgeons in the treatment of pancreatic cancer. In addition, Janet Rader, MD, became Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Most recently with the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Dr. Rader is one of the country’s leading researchers into the genetic basis for gynecologic cancer.

New Clinics
Nine specialty physicians began practicing at a new Froedtert & The Medical College clinic at St. Joseph’s Hospital in West Bend. In addition, the new Westbrook Health Center, Froedtert & The Medical College’s seventh primary care off-site location, opened in Waukesha in a former Steinhafel’s location.

Nursing News
Kathy Bechtel, most recently with Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minn., was named chief nursing officer, succeeding Pam Maxson-Cooper who retired from the full-time role. Maxson-Cooper was honored this year with The Business Journal’s “Woman of Influence” award. Froedtert nurse Julie Crawford, RN, was selected as the second runner-up in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s “Nurse of the Year” award. Sue Dummer, RN, received a “Health Care Hero” award from Biz Times Milwaukee. Froedtert Hospital was selected as one of Nursing Professionals Magazine’s 2009 “Top 100 Hospitals to Work For.”

Breast Care Excellence
The Froedtert & The Medical College Breast Center was accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, a program of the American College of Surgeons. Accreditation signifies a commitment to multidisciplinary care, clinical research, patient education and continuous quality improvement.

Teaching and Research
As eastern Wisconsin’s only academic medical center, we remain steadfast in our commitment to teaching and research. Our educational programs benefit nearly 400 medical students, 250 residents and fellows, 700 nursing students and 360 other health professionals. As for research, patients have access to many clinical trials unavailable at other local hospitals.

Physician Awards
Skin cancer surgeon Marcy Neuburg, MD, was named 2009 recipient of the Thomas L. Smallwood Award for Patient Care Excellence. This annual award recognizes a physician for exceptional patient care and service as a role model to other physicians. Ann Hoch, DO, was named a 2009 Champion in Women’s Health award winner by the Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation.
