Progressive Community Health CentersFroedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin has had a long partnership with Progressive Community Health Centers, a federally qualified healthcare center (FQHC).
School NurseFroedtert Hospital provides a school nurse to Milwaukee Public Schools’ Westside Academies, two schools serving close to 700 students (grades K – 8) in the Washington Park neighborhood. The nurse provides care and case management for students during the school year and summer and helps link their families to health and dental services provided by Progressive Community Health Center.
Milwaukee Health Care PartnershipFroedtert Hospital is a member of the Milwaukee Health Care Partnership. With a focus on expanding healthcare coverage, access and care coordination, the Partnership brings together healthcare providers, government agencies and community organizations to collaboratively improve the health of underserved people in Milwaukee County.
The Milwaukee Health Care Partnership is a recipient of the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) NOVA Award for its hospital-led efforts to improve community health. It was one of only five health care collaboratives honored for making a difference in the lives of the most vulnerable in their communities.
Community Education ProgramsFroedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin conducts annual community education programs and health screenings for the community. Education programs cover a variety of health improvement and disease prevention topics such as safe driving for teens, nutrition, heart health and CPR/first aid, free prostate screenings, and a free teen/single parent childbirth series.
Pastoral Care Volunteer Training CourseThe Pastoral Care Course is designed to prepare persons of all faiths for hospital or parish visitation. Funded by a grant and free to all volunteers, the course is offered in the spring and fall of each year (15 students each time). Participants are required to attend all 10 sessions (30 hours of classroom and 10 hours of supervised patient visits). Upon completion, participants are awarded a pastoral care volunteer certificate.
Forever ChangedAs a response to both local and national community health needs, the staff of the Level I Trauma Center at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin is committed to injury prevention throughout our community. In an effort to reduce traffic-related injuries and deaths among teens, the Trauma Program created Forever Changed, a program aimed at high school juniors and seniors students. The program, features a mock car crash, takes a serious look at teenage drinking, driving and risk-taking behaviors. Coordinated by Trauma Program staff, Forever Changed also includes involvement from emergency response services in southeastern Wisconsin.
Just Drive CampaignResponding to the fact that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for 15-20 year olds, and the primary cause for collisions is “driver inattention,” Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin launched the “Just Drive!” campaign. The campaign is aimed to help reduce distracted driving by educating both teens and parents about the importance of safe driving. A key component of the campaign is asking teens and parents to sign the Just Drive! contract to hold them accountable for their driving behavior. The contract asks for a commitment from teens and parents to take that responsibility seriously.
Choose SafeThe Trauma Center at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin takes a comprehensive approach to injury prevention. Community injury prevention is an important part of the Trauma Center’s mission as a Level I trauma facility. Choose Safe is a media campaign dedicated to increasing public awareness of injury risk and prevention. Studies show that media campaigns like Choose Safe are effective at reducing reckless behavior.
