Exercises I Hate: Part 4 (Lat Pull-Down)

Lat Pull-Down ExampleThis exercise makes the list more based on form than the actual exercise itself. I often get asked by patients about getting back to weightlifting after shoulder surgery. One exercise that I always caution them on is doing the Lat Pull-Down with the bar behind their head.

Many people lack the shoulder flexibility to get the arms behind their head easily which leads to more neck flexion to complete the motion. This could potentially cause some neck pain, and isn’t worth the risk as EMG studies show the activation of the lats is the basically the same if you pull the bar down in front of your head to your chest.

This change may go against years of teaching and some of the instructural pictures on the machines at the gym, but most likely your shoulders and neck will thank you.
