Froedtert Hospital Breaks Ground for Mortenson Construction Healing Plaza

More than 60 people attended a groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of work on a 20,000-square-foot garden plaza on the eastern side of the Froedtert Hospital campus. Cancer survivor Ben Levin joined contributors, hospital volunteers and project representatives in planting the first flowers in a giant window box that will remain at the site as work continues, offering a reminder of the peaceful oasis that is to come.

Entirely funded by contributions to the Froedtert Hospital Foundation and named for a major donor, the Mortenson Construction Healing Plaza will feature three distinctive garden areas, trees, walking paths, benches and a waterfall. The Healing Plaza will be open to patients, visitors and staff, and is expected to be completed in late summer.

“People come to Froedtert Hospital at some of the most difficult and challenging times of their lives. The Healing Plaza is very much in keeping with our commitment to caring for the whole person, addressing the spirit, mind and body,” said William D. Petasnick, president and chief executive officer of Froedtert Hospital. “We are deeply grateful to the generous donors who have made this project possible.”

Give. The best care begins with you.

Froedtert Hospital Foundation, the charitable arm of Froedtert Hospital, provides support for the highly specialized care, research and teaching that distinguish Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin as eastern Wisconsin's only academic medical center.

You play a critical role in our ability to sustain and enhance the research, specialization and technology that allow us to advance patient care.  Thanks to donors like you, we can ensure the most advanced education for physicians, nurses and clinical staff, fund the latest in research and technology and offer the most comprehensive medical treatment in the region in a healing environment for patients.

Double the Impact of Your Gift

Looking to stretch your charitable giving dollars?  Consider this special opportunity:  Give now to the Froedtert Hospital Foundation’s Prostate and Urologic Cancer Fund and your gift will be matched 2:1 (that is, two dollars for every one dollar you give) by a grateful patient and generous donor.  This offer expires when $50,000 total has been matched or no later than Dec. 31, 2010.

As the area’s only academic medical center, Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin is uniquely positioned to battle cancer through patient care, education and research.  The Prostate and Urologic Cancer Program is distinguished for its physicians specializing in certain cancers (such as prostate, bladder, kidney and other cancers), patient access to clinical trials (the primary way that new treatments are introduced to patients) and commitment to cancer screening.

Gifts to the Prostate and Urologic Cancer Fund have supported important initiatives in the past year including:

  • A second mobile clinic for a free prostate cancer screening event at Miller Park, enabling more than 500 men to be screened;
  • Participation in a national, 12-site study of high-intensity ultrasound as a potential treatment for some men with prostate cancer.
  • A new support group for bladder cancer patients.

In the next year, charitable contributions to the Froedtert Hospital Foundation will underwrite a new outcomes study for the Prostate and Urologic Cancer Program.  This report will be a valuable resource for patients and referring physicians, helping them to make more informed decisions about treatment options available here.

So much more could be done with more funding.  More patient-centered research, targeted toward more effective treatments with fewer side effects.  More screening efforts aimed at finding cancer in its earliest, generally most curable stage.  More support to patients, so they can better face the psychological, quality of life and survivorship issues that so often come with cancer care and beyond.  The opportunities are almost endless.
