Froedtert patients, nurses, physicians and staff celebrated the gift of life at the 12th Annual Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Transplant Picnic on Sunday, September 11, 2011.

Funded by donors to the Froedtert Hospital Foundation, organ recipients and their donors were invited for a day of sharing, information and fun. Dr. Sundaram Hariharan kicked off the day with a welcome and introduced the educational speakers, Denise Teves Qualler, MD, MS, assistant professor of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Colin McKean, transplant recipient and Diane Mancini, transplant recipient and her husband, Dan. Nora Sale, vice president and executive director, Froedtert Hospital Foundation and Cathy Buck, RN, president, Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin, showed their support at the event.

Patients and families gathered educational information and tips at the various information booths during the day. Lunch was served on the patio outside the Dining Room and entertainment during the lunch hour was provided by the band, Whole Step Down, led by singer Carl Robl, transplant recipient. There was also a special appearance for patients and families from Dottie the Dot, Wisconsin’s organ, tissue and eye donation mascot.

Dr. Hariharan closed out the day with the Tree of Life ceremony in Helfaer Auditorium. Speakers Ruth Agrusa and Dr. David Wyatt, living donor transplant recipients, shared their heartfelt experiences. The annual ribbon tying on the tree of life was momentous as Dr. Hariharan led the group to the special tree, outside the front 92nd Street entrance. The tree is dedicated to those who have shared the gift of life through organ donation and transplantation. The recipients and donors hung ribbons on the tree with gratitude.
