PGY1 Residency Project
Development of a systematic methodology for handling of black box warnings

A Black Box Warning (BBW) is the strongest medication related warning issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is placed on drugs which may be associated with a significant risk for developing a serious adverse drug event (ADE).  Proper monitoring and prescribing of these drugs are essential safe practices to ensure optimal drug efficacy.  Currently, at Froedtert Hospital there is no formal process for handing drugs with BBW.  For this project, I will review Froedtert’s current formulary and identify drugs which carry a BBW according to the FDA.  I will then develop a systematic process for addressing safety issues on a per medication basis and apply to each medication identified.  In addition, a screening process will be established for new medications as they are reviewed for formulary addition.

Why did you choose to pursue a residency?
I choose to pursue a residency to further my pharmacy education by advancing my knowledge, clinical skills and professional abilities. My goal is to develop skills that will allow me to practice at an advanced level and solve complex medication related problems.

What attracted you to Froedtert’s pharmacy residency program?
Specific criteria that were important to me when selecting a residency program included:  affiliation with an academic medical center, rotations offered, flexibility within the rotations to meet the needs of my personal interests, organization of the program, strength of clinical pharmacy services, and being mentored by highly qualified clinical pharmacists. In addition, Froedtert offered several rotations in a variety of critical care settings, which was a strong interest of mine. After interviewing at Froedtert, I was confident that this organization has strength in all of the aforementioned areas and would provide me with the tools needed to achieve my career goals.
