PGY1 Residency Project Creation of a medication collection and disposal program
The 2015 American Society of Health-System Pharmacy (ASHP) initiative challenges health-system pharmacy departments to increase the extent to which they engage in public health initiatives on behalf of their communities. My project is being developed to satisfy this goal and an increasing need at Froedtert Hospital for outpatient medication disposal. This project will result in either a continuous collection or periodic event that will facilitate collection and proper disposal of expired or unneeded medications, with an emphasis on narcotics and oncology medications.
Why did you choose to pursue a residency? I was most interested in expanding my clinical knowledge and increasing my confidence. I wanted to experience many different pharmacy specialties to help me choose a career path in the future.
What attracted you to Froedtert’s pharmacy residency program? Before becoming a resident at Froedtert, I had already held two intern positions and completed one student rotation here. From these experiences, I knew that Froedtert was a great place to learn and grow into a more knowledgeable clinical pharmacist. I loved that Froedtert was a large teaching hospital and that it had a large residency class. I found the staff to be incredibly knowledgeable and very willing to teach. I liked Froedtert’s staffing requirement because I knew that this would help to increase my confidence and ability to work independently. Additionally, I was excited that Froedtert offered the opportunity to receive a teaching certificate as part of the residency.
