PGY1 Residency Project
Evaluation of vancomycin and linezolid prescribing based on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus risk assessment
The objective is to perform a retrospective review of current practice regarding MRSA risk assessment and subsequent antibiotic treatment choice. I will look at trends with prescribing habits among various services as well as stratify risk factors according to the incidence of MRSA in our patient population. The primary outcome is to identify the percentage of patients initiated on vancomycin or linezolid as recommended by the IDSA guidelines. Secondary outcomes include number of patients that yielded a positive culture for MRSA as well as overall grams per patient day of vancomycin and linezolid used during the study period.

Why did you choose to pursue a residency?
A PGY1 residency program was the best choice for me because I wanted to continue my advancement towards becoming a proficient pharmacist through expansion of my clinical knowledge and practice of evidence-based medicine. My ultimate goal in pursuing a residency is to use the expertise gained to improve the quality of care and outcomes my patients receive.

What attracted you to Froedtert’s pharmacy residency program?
The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Froedtert was in line with the characteristics of my ideal program. I was impressed by the diverse rotation options offered and the opportunity to train under the guidance of experienced clinical specialists who are dedicated to advancing the profession of pharmacy. I have found that pharmacists are a valued member of the healthcare team at Froedtert and there are numerous opportunities to participate in direct patient care. Also, with being at an academic medical center, there are ample opportunities to precept students as well as participate in a teaching certificate program. Most importantly, I was drawn to the high level of resident satisfaction and the friendly and energetic work environment that has been created for them.
