| Studies have determined that about 50 percent of trauma patients are under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of their injury or accident. Most everyone recognizes the risk associated with driving under the influence of alcohol, yet a recent study found that 34 percent of drivers admitted to a Maryland trauma center tested positive for illicit drugs, without the presence of alcohol.
Many trauma centers have stopped testing for alcohol and drug use because third party payer policies and statutes allow for denial of payments for patients who test positive for alcohol and other drugs at the time of injury.
Most healthcare providers have a keen ability to recognize the alcohol intoxicated trauma patient, however, the patient under the influence of illicit drugs can elude even seasoned healthcare providers. It is imperative that healthcare providers learn to identify patients under the influence of illicit drugs, as drug use at the time of injury can complicate management of the trauma patient and increase morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, recognition of drug use and abuse creates the potential for intervention and prevention of future accidents and injuries.
We are very excited to announce Robert M. Stutman, retired DEA special agent, as our keynote speaker this year. Mr. Stutman became a street agent with DEA in 1965. He retired in 1990 as Special Agent in Charge of the New York Field Division. During his years with the DEA he was referred to as "one of our nation's heroes" (Dan Rather - CBS News), and "the most famous narc in America" (New York Magazine). In addition, Mr.Stutman has been the Special Consultant on substance abuse for both CBS and PBS. He has appeared regularly on "60 minutes", "48 hours", "Firing Line", "The Ted Koppel Show", "Today", "Good Morning America", and "Phil Donahue". Mr. Stutman has given about 100 speeches a year over the last 15 years and was named "Speaker of theYear" by the Young Presidents Organization.
