About the Graduated Driver License System

The following is a summary of the requirements under the Wisconsin GDL System:
 

Temps-Instruction Permit (Learner Permit)

Driver must:

  • Be at least fifteen years and six months of age
  • Be enrolled in behind-the-wheel driver education to pass the vision and road knowledge tests
  • Pay $25 fee
  • Be accompanied by a qualified instructor, parent/legal guardian, or sponsor* over 21 years old; immediate family members may ride along in the back seat
    * Sponsor is defined as a parent, step-parent, foster parent, sponsoring family parent of a foreign student, or legal guardian who has signed as a sponsor, accepting liability for any and all driving actions of the minor; if a parent or legal guardian is not present, a grandparent, aunt, uncle, sibling 18 years of age or older, or spouse 18 years of age or older may be approved as a sponsor


Did You Know

  • Points double for every traffic ticket after the first
  • A temporary license can be suspended for six months if the driver receives 12 or more points in 12 months

 

Probationary License

Driver must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Complete driver education course
  • Pass a road test
  • Hold the temporary license for at least six months
  • Accumulate at least 30 hours of driving practice under the temporary license restrictions (10 hours of which must be at night)
  • Be conviction-free for six months prior to applying
  • Not drive between midnight and 5:00 am, except to work or school, or if accompanied by a person who holds a valid regular license with two years licensed driving experience who is either a qualified instructor, a spouse 19 or older, or a person 21 years old or older
  • Have no more than one passenger other than immediate family members or a qualified adult*
    * Qualified Adult is defined as someone with at least two years of driving experience who has a valid regular driver license.
  • Held probationary license for 2-3 years

  • A probationary license can be suspended for six months if a driver receives 12 or more points in 12 months
  • Points double for every traffic ticket after the first
  • Passenger and curfew restrictions will be extended for another six months if the driver violates the restrictions or receives a moving traffic conviction, suspension, or revocation
