Dedicated Rehab, Faster Recovery
People who undergo total joint replacement at Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin have access to a staff of rehabilitation professionalswho are dedicated 100 percent to joint replacement patients. Their unique therapy approach helps patients get on their feet sooner and spend less time in the hospital.
The rehabilitation staff includes two complete rehab teams. Each team consists of a physical therapist and an occupational therapist who work exclusively with knee and hip replacement patients. Their goal is to help patients achieve the highest levelof independence and the safest level of functioning before they go home.
According to David Del Toro, MD, Medical College of Wisconsin physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist, the rehabilitation teams differ from many in that they begin therapy on the day of surgery. The philosophy is to get the patient mobile as soon as possible.“The outcomes are just as good, the patient just gets to go home sooner,” Del Toro says. “Patients can then continue their rehab at home or as an outpatient.”
