Wisconsin Donor Network Provides Education and SupportOrgan donation might be the gift of life, but it’s not always an easy decision. The Wisconsin Donor Network understands that fact and provides information, education and support to individuals, families and communities pondering organ donation.
The Wisconsin Donor Network is the sole organ procurement agency for southeastern Wisconsin, responding to all potential cases of organ donation in a 10-county area. But the Network’s function goes far beyond obtaining organs for transplant, said Jay Campbell, JD, interim director.
“We very strongly believe that our mission is to serve the donor family, and that they need to make the decision that’s right for them,” Campbell said. “We very strongly believe that yes and no are both good answers. Our job is to be there for them and with them, to provide information and to support them in making that decision.”
Specially trained personnel, called “designated requestors,” spend time with each donor family, answering questions and providing support as necessary. Often, families feel that organ donation is “the one good thing to come out of an otherwise horrible loss,” Campbell said. Other families decline organ donation and their wishes are equally respected.
The Wisconsin Donor Network also educates area hospitals and communities about organ donation. Outreach programs address concerns and clear up misconceptions. Educators also talk about the ongoing need for organ donation.
“There are 94,000 people waiting for transplants, but only a little over 20,000 people will get transplanted every year,” Campbell said. “There is a tremendous need for organ donors.”
