OB/GYN Resident’s Journey

Before Dobie Giles, MD, Medical College of Wisconsin chief resident of Obstetrics/ Gynecology, embarked on his medical career, he spent many of his formative years in the hospital: his younger sister was born with several birth defects.

“I later realized that from the day she was born, I was drawn to the medical profession,” Dr. Giles says.

He is the first in his family to attend college.

Giles, who hails from Tennessee, wanted to experience a different part of the country while pursuing his ambition. “I thought Froedtert had a super program,” he said. “And I fell in love with the place. The surgical experience is very diverse and extensive; more so as compared to other hospitals in the country. It is definitely helping me become a better surgeon.”

As his residency comes to an end, Dr. Giles reflects on how working at Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin and with patients here have also made him a better person: “Being involved in our patients’ lives makes me appreciate my family and the wonders of life,” he comments. “I get a great deal of satisfaction from helping patients get through the most difficult, as well as the happiest times of their lives.”

For the care Dr. Giles has shown his patients, they in turn express their appreciation through holiday cards, pictures of their kids, and long letters thanking his team “for being quick and responsive” in obstetrical emergencies.

When his journey comes to an end at Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin, Dr. Giles will proceed to Louisiana State University in New Orleans to pursue a three-year urogynecology fellowship. “This program will help me further improve my surgical skills, specifically in relation to vaginal reconstruction and correcting incontinence issues,” he says.
