Colorectal Cancer Prevention Tips and Guidelines Colorectal cancers can be complex and many factors can affect the course of the disease and its treatment. Here are some general guidelines and tips to help you detect colorectal cancer early:
- Men and women should have their first screening colonoscopy at age 50. If you have a family history or other risk factors, you may need to have one sooner. If you have symptoms or concerns, consult your physician right away, regardless of your age.
- While there are several other important screening tests, none are as comprehensive or definitive as a colonoscopy. Any red flags raised by screening tests will lead to a colonoscopy — it's the first and best test for colorectal cancer.
- If you've been diagnosed with colorectal cancer, seek a second opinion before you have surgery, especially if you've been told a colostomy is your only option. There are treatments that can help avoid a colostomy.
- Watch for symptoms including blood in the stool; narrowing of stools; changes in your bowel habits; weight loss; abdominal pain; or fatigue and weakness from anemia. Remember: don't wait for symptoms. Get screened according to your personal history, family health history and medical needs.
