Froedtert Today

March 2007 Issue

New Partner, New Location

Mary McCarthy, CEO of Harry W. Schwartz Bookshops, called it “kismet” when she described how the collaboration between Small Stones and her company came to be. Small Stones, the health resource center of Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, wanted help with the retail aspect of its center, and the two organizations talked about working together.

“Almost as a joke, somebody said, ‘It’s too bad you’re not next to us,’” McCarthy recalled. “And, just a day before we talked with Small Stones, the person at the Hallmark store next to our Brookfield shop unexpectedly asked if we might want to expand.”

That casual conversation led to a formal collaboration between Small Stones and Harry W. Schwartz Bookshops. In November, Small Stones moved in next to the bookshop in the V. Richards Plaza in Brookfield, and the partnership is flourishing.

“We wanted to offer a greater number and variety of resources,” Kathy Steele, BSN, RN, one of two Small Stones nurse educators said. “Our mission is still the same: to offer credible health information to the community. We still have the lending library and nurses on staff to answer questions and help people find information. It’s all part of Froedtert’s mission to give back to the community.”

With three times the space, a private consultation area, a community conference room and ample free parking, Small Stones has expanded its offerings in every area. From books, CDs and to hard-to-find health-related retail products to classes and workshops, resources abound at the new location.

While Small Stones is open to anyone, annual memberships offer benefits and discounts. Members receive one free cholesterol screening per year, a discount on most merchandise, a free newsletter, a free personal health journal, library privileges and more. Memberships have carried over to the new location.

Small Stones, at 17145 W. Bluemound Road in Brookfield, is open Monday-Friday 9:30 am to 9:00 pm; Saturday 9:30 am to 5:30 pm; and Sunday 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. You can contact Small Stones at 262-797-2485.
