Kidney Transplant Survival Rates Lead the Nation The Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Transplant Center leads the nation in kidney transplant survival rates among centers of similar volume. Transplant surgeons here conduct about 120 kidney transplants per year.
According to the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (January 2009), the Froedtert & The Medical College Transplant Center has the highest one-year patient survival rate (99.1 percent), as well as the highest one-year graft survival rate ( 97.6 percent) in the nation among 91 programs that perform more than 70 transplants per year.
“Transplant is the ultimate multidisciplinary endeavor,” said Christopher Johnson, MD, Medical College of Wisconsin transplant surgeon and director of the Froedtert & The Medical College Transplant Center. He credits the combined expertise of physicians and others on the kidney transplant team for the exceptional survival rates, citing more than a dozen specialties that play a critical role in successful kidney transplantation.
“We have a depth of expertise many programs cannot claim. For example, Sundaram Hariharan, MD, chief of Nephrology, is an internationally recognized expert in transplant nephrology,” Dr. Johnson said. “To stay at this level, we constantly analyze our outcomes.”
