Cancer Nurse Helps “Make Order Out of Chaos”

Jill Royten, RN, OCN, understands the impact of breast cancer on people’s lives. “For women,” she says, “a diagnosis of breast cancer is like a bomb just went off.”

Jill Royten, RN, OCN   Royten is a nurse in the Neoplastic Diseases and Related Disorders Clinic (Hematology/Oncology) at Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin. Her job is to help breast cancer patients not only understand their treatment, but also cope emotionally while managing family responsibilities and other demands. “Once women are given information and support, they can usually put it together and make it work,” says Royten. “Nursing is really about making order out of chaos for people.”

Clinic Supervisor Diane Johnson says Royten has a great ability to help patients move forward. “She is wonderful with her lightheartedness and her optimism looking at life, taking it day by day and celebrating it.”

Stimulating Partnership

While her three children were young, Royten pursued nursing part-time. She has been going full-time for the past 10 years. One of her favorite parts of the job is working with Medical College of Wisconsin physicians. “They value our experience and seek out our opinions — it’s a real interdependent relationship,” she says. “That really benefits the patient, and it makes Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin a stimulating place to work.”
