Nurses Using Laptop Computers
to Document Meds

This spring, nurses at Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin began documenting patient medications electronically using a new system called eMAR. According to Renee Hinkel, RN, manager of Patient Care Information Systems, the primary aim of eMAR is to enhance patient safety.

With eMAR, which stands for electronic medication administration record, nurses use wireless laptop computers to document the medications they administer to patients. The new system features powerful reporting capabilities that could improve patient care by giving physicians easier access to medication history. The hospital launched eMAR in May with 70 laptop stations. Hinkel says that number will eventually double.
