Women's Health Champion

Anne Z. Hoch, DO, Medical College of Wisconsin physiatrist and director of the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Women’s Sports Medicine Program, has been honored with a 2009 Champion in Women’s Health award by the Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation.

The award recognizes individuals who demonstrate leadership and devote themselves to improving quality of life for women and families.

Dr. Hoch won the award for her work in osteoporosis and her discoveries about a condition known as the female athlete triad, which combines low energy availability, menstrual abnormalities and low bone mineral density. The condition often leads to the same steroid and hormonal profiles as postmenopausal women. In a landmark 2007 study, Dr. Hoch showed sedentary high school girls are even more at risk for future osteoporosis than their athletic counterparts.

“I felt extremely honored to receive this award,” Dr. Hoch said. “I am thankful for my colleagues who are part of the Women’s SportsMedicine Program. I am grateful for our ability to provide gender-specific care to young girls and women.”
