Tips for Keeping You Safe and Well

Baby It's Cold ... and Slippery Outside

So you have been cooped up inside for a while; it is cold out and dreary. You need to get out and do something. A simple walk can really lift the spirits. Before you go put on your mukluks, there are a few safety things you should consider first.

You've probably already heard about proper winter clothing, but a quick review never really hurts. Dress for the weather. The layered look is still in for winter. Wearing loose fitting, lightweight layers will actually keep you warmer. Wear a hat and mittens. Mittens are a lot warmer than gloves. Scarves should be worn as well especially if the air is bitter cold. You can wear the scarf over your mouth and nose. This will help warm up the air before breathing it in. Your jacket should be made of a tightly woven material. This material should also be water repellent. Snow is another form of water. Your boots should have a rubber or neoprene sole. Avoid plastic and leather since they can be quite slippery when wet.

When you are outdoors, whether you are on a walk, in a parking lot or on your driveway, there may be ice. Remember to walk like a penguin! Take short shuffling steps keeping the center of gravity over your feet as best as you can. Bend slightly forward and walk flat footed. Keep your hands out of your pocket. Keep your eyes on the walkway. If you do slip on the ice, try to twist your body so you land on your backside. Bend your back and try to tuck your head in so you do not smack your noggin on the pavement. If you are carrying something, drop it. You need to protect yourself over the groceries! Try to relax when falling; I know easier said then done. Once you do fall, take a minute to assess the situation. Can you move everything? Can you get up safely? Do you need help getting up? Keep your cell phone in your pocket so if you need help, you can reach your phone. Your purse may have been dropped and out of easy reach with your phone in it.

Indoor winter slips can be prevented. Keep a rubber-backed rug near your door. Either take off your boots at the door or make sure you remove the wetness by wiping your feet. If an umbrella was used, do not place it on the floor. The water from the umbrella can collect on the floor making a slipping hazard.

Enjoy your walk and remember the penguins!
