The clouds are breaking up, and the sun is popping through. You were told to leave your home because of the flooding. There is so much to do, but where to begin can be overwhelming.
So the rain stopped, now what? Until the authorities give the all clear, do not go back home. Even with the waters receding, it does not mean things are safe. Animals are displaced with the flooding and may find their way into your home. Be careful!
Once back into your home, a few more safety tips. Inspect the foundation using only a battery powered flashlight. There can be flammable fumes in your home that you are unaware of. Watch for downed power lines and report them to the authorities. Have an electrician check your lines to make sure they are safe to use. Contact your local health department to see if your water is safe to drink or if they are recommending boiling first.
All this cleaning!?!? The flood waters can pick up toxic chemicals from the sewers, farmlands, and your home. Anything that has come into contact with the flood waters needs to be cleaned or thrown out. All fresh food and medicines that came into contact with the flood waters must be thrown out!
