Tips for Keeping You Safe and Well

Holy smokes!

Fall is my favorite time of the year — the leaves changing, the crisp air and building a fire. We finally have a fireplace up at the cabin. I am looking forward to making a fire, getting cozy with a good book and drinking hot chocolate. But, there are things you need to remember before striking the match.

  • Make sure your fireplace and chimney are clean. Have your chimney inspected by a specialist. Make sure the area around the hearth is clear of anything flammable and only have fire-resistant materials on the wall and hearth. Always use a metal mesh screen and keep the glass doors open when there is a fire.

  • When building a fire, think safety as well. Never use flammable liquids to start a fire. Some wood is pretty to look at, but only use seasoned hardwood. You do not have to have a roaring fire to enjoy your fireplace. Build a small fire that burns completely and will thus produce less smoke. Do not burn anything besides wood, and place the wood towards the back of the fireplace on a grate.

  • The fire is burning well. Never leave the fire unattended. If you are finished enjoying your fire, make sure the fire is extinguished. Take the hot ashes and place them in a metal container. Place the container outside and thoroughly soak the ashes with water.

  • Place a smoke alarm on every floor of your home. Test the batteries in the alarm monthly. An easy reminder for changing your batteries is to change them with daylight savings time.

A couple more marshmallows in my hot chocolate and I am all set …
