Tips for Keeping You Safe and Well

Keeping the Other Family Members Safe

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge animal person. I love all kinds of animals whether they are a dog or a warthog. Keeping our pets safe is a fulltime job. A job that is not always the easiest either. It is also not a cheap job! Multiple pet households can become quite expensive.

Using the same medications on different animals can lead to a toxic event. Drugs for birds can be toxic for cats. The same can be true for human medications used on your pets. Or flea dips designed for a dog can be toxic on a cat. Please follow the advice from your pet’s veterinarian. And read the directions fully. There may be an “after treatment” portion designed to keep small children safe from exposure.

Winter, which can last into March and April in Wisconsin, can really become an issue. Wash the paws of your outside pets. The de-icer can cause skin irritation and breakdown. Your pets may also try to lick the irritants off of their paws which in turn can cause toxicity for your pet. You can coat your pet’s pads with olive oil to keep the irritants off.

Also anti-freeze is a huge temptation for your pets because it is sweet tasting. One lick can be deadly! Clean up spills right away. Keep unused anti-freeze up and out of the way from pets as well as children.

And I end with my favorite quote. “No outfit is complete without pet hair.”
