Tips for Keeping You Safe and Well

S.O.S. Saving our Shepherds

I know I have mentioned many times before that we have two dogs. Pets can bring great comfort and love, and even I can admit this: headaches. Our pets can get into the silliest things that they do not realize are safety hazards.

  • Many hazards come from ingesting toxic things. Animals do not always make the best digestive choices. A lot of people know that chocolate is toxic for dogs. Did you know grapes and raisins are, too? Avocados are toxic for birds. Alcoholic drinks, teas, and coffees should not be offered to pets or left unattended.

  • Garbage cans can be a host of potentially tasty but bad treats. Even good pets may decide to get into the trash if they are bored or hungry. The combination of food scraps, discarded chemicals and broken glass can lead to some serious outcomes. Make sure your indoor and outdoor garbage cans are securely covered.

  • While our gardens and lawns are very important, they can also cause harm to our pets. Cocoa mulch is not a food product but, if ingested, it can be toxic. Read the labels on pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Pets are lower to the ground and can easily ingest, absorb or inhale the chemicals. This is a discussion my husband and I have every spring. Are weeds really that bad? They are still green!
