Slip Sliding Away
The snow is melting, and winter is over. You and I both know that we're being fooled by Mother Nature. She wants us to believe this so she can hit us when we're least expecting it and the least prepared.
A couple of weeks ago, we had a major snowstorm followed by bitter cold. All over the TV and radio, announcers told people to stay home, don’t go out, and keep off the roads. That is sound advice, but what if that is not an option?
Remember to plan ahead. Do you have your car safety kit with you in case you get stuck? Do you need to replace you wiper blades? Did you add extra driving time? Did you let anyone know that you will be out driving in the bad weather? Do they know where you are going?
There are a few things to keep in mind if you must drive on icy, snowy roads. Keep your windows and your lights clean. Also keep your lights on; this will increase your visibility to other motorists. Bridges freeze first, so be very careful while driving on those. Decrease your speeds. Just because it states 65 mph, it does not mean you should go that fast. Leave room between you and the other motorist. Do not slam down on your brakes, rather gently apply them. This will help in reducing skidding. Do not use cruise control due to the increase in skidding.
Be smart. Do not pass the plows, but do give them plenty of room. Also just because you have 4-wheel drive, does not mean you have “4-wheel stop”!
