Tips for Keeping You Safe and Well

Winter Wonderland

I am part of the minority that loves snow. Sitting in my living room, drinking my coffee and watching the snow fall, is something that I really enjoy. What I am not too keen on is driving in the snow. Granted I do have four-wheel drive, so it helps, but it is not the end all. Remember four-wheel drive does not mean that you will stop any better on snow and ice. It would be awesome if we all could stay home once the snow starts, but that is not reality.

So what can we all do to be safer on the roads in our winter season? Look ahead. This is Wisconsin; we all know that it is going to snow eventually. Have your car or truck winterized. Check your tires. Do you need to have them replaced or inflated? Is your spare in good shape as well? Do you know where your jack is? Does your defroster work? Does the heater work well? How old is the battery? If it is older than 3-years-old, it may be time to get a new one. Check your antifreeze level, too. My dad told us all the time to keep our gas tanks over half full at all times, and he is right. This keeps the lines and tank in good shape and if you do get stuck, you may need to keep the car running for heat.

Before traveling, check the weather. You can find out the latest road conditions by going to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation website at http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov or by calling toll free at 1-800-ROADWIS (762-3947). Share the details with someone. Give them a copy of your route. Also share the timeframe when you should be reaching your destination and returning home.

Ugh, now I am stuck, what now? Stay in your vehicle! You can run the engine for 10 minute intervals for heat. You may also turn on the dome light at night only during the time the car is running. Make sure your exhaust is not blocked. Crack the windows to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Tie something bright to your roof rack, antenna or door handle. This will make your vehicle easier to spot for the rescue team.

Now sit back enjoy the snow. And I do enjoy the hazelnut creamer in my coffee …
