Hope & Spirit Honoree: Jeff Popken

When Jeff Popken went to the hospital about 14 years ago for a ruptured aneurysm, who could have imagined his life would be so different today?

The Greenfield resident underwent a series of surgeries to stop the bleeding in his brain. But then he began to have seizures. He sought alternative treatment at Froedtert Hospital where he underwent extensive tests to determine where the seizures were coming from. He hoped to be a candidate for epilepsy surgery. In March 1995 he underwent awake brain surgery. It was a success. The seizing portion of his brain was removed and he has not had a single seizure since.

Jeff’s life has changed. He is now employed by Midwest Airlines. An avid volunteer at Froedtert, he visits patients who must undergo the same testing that he endured.

“He shares his enlightening stories and encourages the patients to have faith and hope,” Linda Allen, RN, Epilepsy Program Coordinator, wrote in her nomination of Jeff for the Hope & Spirit Award.
