Hope & Spirit Honoree: William & Candace Starkey

To see the value of love for each other and resilience in the face of physical and emotional challenges, look no further than the faces of William and Candace Starkey. Consider their story:

One evening when Willie was here, recovering from his blood stem cell transplant for acute myelogenous leukemia, he and Candie were playing cards. She had a heart attack. Following their discharges, they stayed at Kathy’s House. Three times a week, the Jefferson couple left Kathy’s House together. Willie headed to BMT, while Candie went to Cardiac Rehab. When she finished her rehab session, she’d go over to be with Willie while he completed his treatment.

“You couldn’t help but smile when you talked with Candie,” said Nicole Fischer, RCEP. “Despite everything she was going through she never failed to ask how were doing.”

“Willie was one of those patients you don’t forget,“ Amy Kremski, RN, said. “One that makes you glad you chose nursing as a profession.”

The Starkeys were nominated by Nicole and Amy, along with seven of their colleagues from the BMT Clinic and Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation.
