Weigelt Named Joint Medical

Director of Clinical Quality

(Feb. 3, 2005) — Reflecting a continuing emphasis on health care quality, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin have appointed John A. Weigelt, MD, the first joint medical director of clinical quality for both institutions. In addition to his new role, Weigelt will continue as chief of the division of trauma and critical care surgery at Froedtert and as a professor of surgery at the Medical College.

Weigelt, who has a master’s degree in medical administration, will lead the effort to develop and manage a collaborative quality management program for the clinical care delivered by both Froedtert & the Medical College.

“John Weigelt is an excellent choice for this position, combining the experience, knowledge and  leadership skills to drive this initiative,” said Bill Petasnick, president and chief executive officer of Froedtert Hospital. “Since coming to this campus in 1999, he developed a comprehensive quality assessment and management plan for the trauma program and guided it through two successful certifications by the American College of Surgeons. He’s also demonstrated the ability to design systems of care that provide safety and high quality to patients with traumatic injuries.”

As the only adult Level I trauma center in eastern Wisconsin, the Froedtert & the Medical College program meets strict national standards and delivers the highest level of specialty expertise, providing around-the-clock availability of specialized surgeons, anesthesiologists, operating rooms, physician specialists, nurses and resuscitation equipment to treat life-threatening injuries.

Petasnick said Weigelt will work in partnership with leaders at Froedtert & the Medical College to evaluate and enhance both organizations’ existing quality infrastructure, and also will participate in the Wisconsin Collaborative for Healthcare Quality program to help identify standards for measuring quality across all health care organizations in Wisconsin.

Froedtert & the Medical College combine the strengths of Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin in an academic medical center that delivers advanced medical care. Froedtert & the Medical College are nationally recognized for exceptional physicians, research leadership, specialty expertise and state-of-the-science treatments and technology.
