J. Frank Wilson, MD, Receives Award

(June 9, 2006) — J. Frank Wilson, MD, Medical College of Wisconsin Radiation Oncologist, was one of three recipients of the American College of Radiology’s (ACR) 2006 Gold Medal award, the society’s highest honor. He received the award at the society’s 2006 annual meeting May 21 in Washington, D.C.

This is the second Gold Medal award for Dr. Wilson, who also received the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology Gold Medal in 2003.

Candidates for the ACR Gold Medal are chosen for their distinguished and extraordinary service to the field of radiology. This includes professional contributions in teaching, basic research, clinical investigation, or radiologic statesmanship, as well as outstanding achievements in service to the ACR, other medical societies, government agencies and quasi-medical organizations.

Other recipients of the award are Robert E. Campbell, MD, from the University of Pennsylvania, and David C. Levin, MD, from Thomas Jefferson University.

“Dr. Wilson has long been recognized by his peers as displaying great compassion for his patients, concern and interest for his colleagues and tremendous integrity in all aspects of his life,” the ACR said in a statement about Dr. Wilson.

The ACR has 30,000 members that include radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, interventional radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians.

Consistently listed among Woodward & White’s Best Doctors in America, Dr. Wilson served as Director of the Medical College Cancer Center from 1994 to 2000, and now serves as Director Emeritus. He has held committee chairs and leadership positions in virtually every national and international organization related to the field of radiation oncology.

Dr. Wilson received his medical degree from the University of Missouri in 1965, and completed a residency in radiation oncology at the Penrose Cancer Hospital in Colorado in 1969. He joined the Medical College faculty in 1974, and has been Professor and Chair of Radiation Oncology since 1985.
