National Recognition for Nursing Excellence
MILWAUKEE (Oct. 17, 2006) — Froedtert Hospital has earned the American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC) highest honor, "Magnet" status, recognizing national excellence in nursing. The designation is awarded to select hospitals, fewer than 5% of hospitals across the country, following an intensive review of documentation, data, and clinical practices, followed by lengthy on-site visits.
"This is a noteworthy achievement for nurses at Froedtert Hospital," said Pam Maxson-Cooper, MS, BSN, RN CNAA, Vice-President Patient Care Services and CNO, Froedtert Hospital. "With such a broad array of services and centers, each with very specific nursing needs, this designation reinforces that a Froedtert nurse, no matter where they are, is dedicated to the same superior, high quality, caring mission."
The ANCC says that Magnet designation "recognizes the quality of nursing programs and demonstrates its importance, and the importance of nurses, to the success of the organization. The ANCC also states that Magnet designation, while recognizing nursing care and quality specifically, also speaks to the hospital's overall quality and to a culture of empowerment, pride, respect, teamwork, and integrity.
“Froedtert Hospital has long been recognized as a leader in healthcare, much to the credit of the quality care delivered by our nurses," said William Petasnick, president and CEO of Froedtert Hospital. "Our patients frequently tell us how the nurses make a difference in their experience here, and our physicians also point to the nurses as a major factor in our ability to deliver excellent care."
Research shows there are clear benefits to hospitals that are awarded Magnet status and to the communities they serve:
- Healthcare consumers have more confidence in the overall quality of a hospital if it has achieved the level of excellence established by the Magnet Recognition Program.
- Magnet designated facilities consistently outperform other facilities in recruiting and retaining nurses resulting in increased stability in patient care and patient satisfaction.
- Because quality nursing is one of the most important factors in enlisting high caliber physicians and specialists, Magnet status becomes an attractive force that extends to the entire facility.
ANCC is the largest and most prominent nursing credentialing organization in the United States. Froedtert Hospital Magnet status is valid for four years.
