Air Guard Members to Receive Froedtert Training

Milwaukee (July 2, 2007) — Froedtert Hospital has formed a partnership with the Wisconsin Air National Guard to train and prepare members of the 128th Air Refueling Wing before deployment. The groundbreaking civilian-military partnership marks just the second of its kind in the United States involving a hospital providing training programs to military troops.

About 20 Milwaukee-area Guardsmen with medical backgrounds will take part in monthly training, scrubbing in for surgeries, observing trauma cases and honing their skills for battlefield medical care.
Col. James Ninomiya, MD

“The partnership will allow our nation’s troops to gain a much more in-depth experience in treating traumatic injuries and additional battlefield–type injuries,” said James Ninomiya, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin. Ninomiya is also a colonel in the 128th Air Refueling Wing. “We can’t think of a better way to support both the community and our nation.”

Froedtert Hospital has the only adult Level I Trauma Center in eastern Wisconsin, and, in 2006, the hospital treated and evaluated nearly 3,000 trauma patients.

“This is clearly a win-win for Wisconsin and Milwaukee” said Col. Donald P. Dunbar, Commander of the 128th Air Refueling Wing, Wisconsin Air National Guard. “Our flight surgeon, Col. James Ninomiya, was instrumental in taking this concept to fruition and forging this partnership. The primary mission of the National Guard is Homeland Defense and this association benefits the community in several ways. It strengthens the skills of Air National Guardsmen in a Level I Trauma Center; it improves our relationship with the civilian medical community in the event of the natural or homeland defense emergency; and it prepares our military medical personnel for the types of medical injuries that they might encounter in a combat environment.”
