Level I Trauma Center Re-Verified

Milwaukee (July 5, 2007) — Wisconsin’s oldest, most experienced adult Level I Trauma Center has been re-verified by the American College of Surgeons. Level I designation is the highest rating a trauma center may receive.

This verification distinguishes Froedtert Hospital as a center that is dedicated to the highest standard of care for patients of sudden illness and injury. “It recognizes the hospital’s ability to treat any medical emergency 24 hours a day, 365 days every year,” says Dr. John Weigelt, Professor and Chief of Trauma and Critical Care at Froedtert Hospital.

“The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Level I Trauma Center is a state-wide resource, relied upon to provide world-class care to severely injured patients in any type of emergency,” Dr. Weigelt says. "Patients benefit from our specialty expertise in trauma, emergency medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics, anesthesiology, radiology, intensive care, otolaryngology, gynecology, obstetrics, plastic and hand surgery and more."

The Trauma Center treats about 2,900 cases a year. Trauma is the leading cause of death throughout an individual’s first 40 years of life. It causes more disability and lost productivity than heart disease and cancer combined.

In addition to patient care, research and education, the Froedtert & Medical College Trauma Center provides a valuable service to people in Wisconsin and is working to strengthen and expand trauma care throughout the region. It is a leader in training and educating other healthcare professionals and in efforts to establish a state-wide trauma system currently under development.
