Physicians Take Adventure Race to New Level

Milwaukee, WI (July 28, 2009) – Two physicians from Froedtert & The Medical College Emergency Department will race 600 miles through the wilderness in the Badlands of South Dakota this summer.

Team MAAR (Middle Aged Adventure Racers) including emergency physicians, Chris Decker and Dan Debehnke, will be participating in Primal Quest, an expedition-level adventure race in which endurance athletes from around the world will compete with one another and against a 600-mile wilderness course.

“Our training and experience as emergency room doctors certainly will help us manage the challenges,” said Chris Decker, MD, Medical Director, Froedtert Hospital Emergency Department and Primal Quest competitor. “We are well–versed in trouble-shooting and multi-tasking whether the challenge is a patient having a heart attack or a 100-foot rock climb.”

This is not the first year they are participating in Primal Quest, but it is the first year they are racing for more than the finish line. They are racing to benefit the Molly Erin Schwab Endowment Fund, which supports research and education programs for residents and staff in the Froedtert & The Medical College Emergency Department.

The Molly Erin Schwab Endowment Fund was started to honor the Emergency Department Staff that used life-saving techniques on Molly when she was rushed to the hospital ten years ago with a pulmonary embolism.
