Catherine Jacobson Named Executive VP for Finance and Strategy

Milwaukee, Wis. (July 27, 2010) — Catherine Jacobson will join the Froedtert & Community Health senior management team as Executive Vice President for Finance and Strategy, Chief Financial and Strategy Officer on Sept. 1, 2010. Jacobson is currently serving as Senior Vice President for Strategic Planning and Finance and Chief Financial Officer at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Earlier this year, Blaine O’Connell, Senior Vice President, Finance, and Chief Financial Officer for Froedtert & Community Health, announced his plans to retire at the end of the year.

Jacobson will be responsible for overseeing the financial and investment planning and strategic initiatives for the health system, which includes Froedtert Hospital, Milwaukee; Community Memorial Hospital, Menomonee Falls; St. Joseph’s Hospital, West Bend; and West Bend Clinic.

“Cathy brings proven fiscal, operational and strategic planning skills and experience in health care and academic medicine,” said David Lubar, Chair of the Search Committee and member of the Froedtert & Community Health Board of Directors. “She has also had numerous appointed and elected leadership roles in the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) reflecting national recognition from her peers as a leader among hospital CFOs.” Jacobson has just completed her term as the National Chair of HFMA and has been on the national board since 2004.

“As the Chief Financial and Strategy Officer, Cathy will further clinical integration among our member organizations as well as develop strategies that strengthen the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin partnership,” said William Petasnick, President and Chief Executive Officer of Froedtert & Community Health. “At Rush, Cathy guided the organization through a long-term strategic plan that led to the organization's receiving a positive outlook from Moody’s and an A- bond rating. She also played a key role in numerous strategic initiatives such as the development of a regional managed care company formed as a partnership between Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center and the Prudential Insurance Company.”

Jacobson is a graduate of Bradley University, a Certified Public Accountant and Fellow in HFMA. She is married and has three children.

Sports Medicine and Brook Smith Offer Baseball Camp

Sports Medicine Center, Brook Smith Offer Baseball Camp

Milwaukee, Wis. (Nov. 15, 2010) – Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Performance Enhancement Program (PEP) and former Wisconsin Lutheran College (WLC) baseball player and coach Brook Smith will host a baseball camp for players in grades 7 through 12. The camp is designed to help develop batting and throwing skills, as well as improve overall performance. It also features injury prevention sessions to help keep athletes safe.

Brook Smith was responsible for coaching the WLC Warriors to their only two overall winning seasons in program history. He played baseball for two seasons at Bradley University in 1991, and was drafted in 1993 by the San Francisco Giants where he played in the minor league system.

The six-week camp costs $400 per participant and starts Jan. 17, 2011. It will be on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Sports Medicine Center. Participants will receive high speed pre- and post-program video analysis with a take-home DVD. Digital throwing analysis is available for an additional fee. Sports Medicine Center, Milwaukee Wave Offer Soccer Camp

Milwaukee, Wis. (Nov. 15, 2010) – Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin, in collaboration with the Milwaukee Wave, is hosting a skills, speed and agility soccer camp. Players in U-11 through U-17 are eligible to participate in the camp. Wave coaches and players, along with athletic trainers from Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Sports Medicine Center Performance Enhancement Program (PEP) will help kids develop position skills, speed and agility.

The camp runs Dec. 27 to Dec. 30 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Uihlein Soccer Park. The cost is $60 per athlete and participants will receive a T-shirt, two Wave tickets and take-home exercises to improve performance and reduce the risk of injury.

Consumers Rank Froedtert Hospital Best in Milwaukee

Milwaukee, Wis. (October 28, 2010) – Froedtert Hospital is the most-preferred hospital in Milwaukee, earning the National Research Corporation’s 2010 Consumer Choice Award for the sixth straight year. The award recognizes hospitals across the United States that healthcare consumers consider to have the highest quality care and reputation. Froedtert was one of just six Wisconsin hospitals to make the list.

The organizations selected for the Consumer Choice Awards are chosen by people who live in the communities the hospitals serve. To determine the top hospitals, NRC conducts an annual Healthcare Market Guide survey of more than 450,000 consumers throughout the United States. Nationwide, the top-ranked hospitals scored highest among the 3,200 hospitals named by consumers who participated in the survey.

Froedtert Hospital Dedicates Healing Plaza

Milwaukee, Wis. (Oct. 25, 2010) — Money contributed by more than 400 donors has created a peaceful oasis on the Froedtert Hospital campus. A distinctive 20,000-square-foot garden plaza wreathed in trees, grasses and shrubs and accented with a pergola, benches, walking paths and a waterwall now graces the entrance to East Clinics building. Personalized messages on paving stones, benches and decorative boulders reflect the sentiments of patients, families and staff.

Wauwatosa mayor Jill Didier and alderwoman Linda Nikcevich were among the more than 150 people who attended a dedication ceremony Oct. 19 that included a “vine-cutting” to mark the official opening of the Mortenson Construction Healing Plaza. Breast cancer survivor Elaine Rettig joined other officials, donors, former patients, staff and volunteers from Froedtert Hospital for the event.

“We are deeply grateful to the many patients, families, staff members and others whose generosity made this project possible,” said William D. Petasnick, president and chief executive officer of Froedtert Hospital. “The calming effect of nature has a therapeutic value all its own, and we hope people will find the Healing Plaza a comforting, restorative sanctuary.”

The approximately $600,000 project was entirely funded by contributions to the Froedtert Hospital Foundation, and named for a major donor, Mortenson Construction. Ground was broken in April. The Healing Plaza is open to patients, visitors and staff.

Registration Open for “Moving Forward” Cycling Event Oct. 10

Milwaukee, Wis. (August 16, 2010) — Registration is open for the second annual Moving Forward: Ride/Walk/Fun Run for Parkinson’s on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, held in Dousman, Wisconsin.

From experienced to novice cyclists, all are invited to join this experience of a lifetime and to help raise awareness for Parkinson’s disease. Additionally, money raised from the event will benefit the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Program and the Davis Phinney Foundation.

The ride consists of a 10-mile, 30-mile or 100-kilometer (62-mile) bike ride into lake country in Dousman. If biking is not your style, but you still wish to come out and show your support, there is a 5K fun run and a two-mile walk on the Glacial Drumlin State Trail starting at 11 am. Food, festivities, and kids’ activities will take place at Bicycle Doctor in Dousman, from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm.

Davis Phinney is a former Olympic and professional cyclist with approximately 20 years of unprecedented success. He won an Olympic Bronze Medal in 1984 and is one of three Americans to win multiple stages of the Tour de France. In 2000, after years of feeling “not quite right”, Davis was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease. He was 40 years old. He began his foundation in 2004 to educate and support people with Parkinson’s in the area of exercise as a form of treatment for PD. He encourages them to celebrate the daily victories in their lives. His foundation raises money to fund Parkinson’s Research.
