Radiation Oncology Program Earns National Accreditation

Milwaukee, WI (May 26, 2010) — Following an intensive survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR), The Medical College of Wisconsin Radiation Oncology program at St. Joseph’s Hospital, West Bend, has been accredited for a two-year term. Only about 10 percent of the nation’s radiation oncology practices achieve this distinction.

Medical College radiation oncologists Roger Byhardt, MD, and Mark Macedon, MD, currently provide care at the Alyce and Elmore Kraemer Cancer Care Center at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Other physician and physicist members of the Medical College radiation oncology practice are: Ergun Ahunbay, Ph.D; Joseph Bovi, MD; Kiran Devisetty, MD; Beth A. Erickson, MD; Selim Firat, MD; Elizabeth Gore, MD; Catherine Hwang, MD; Kristofer Kainz, PhD; Tracy Kelly, MD; Colleen A. Lawton, MD; Allen Li, PhD; Christopher J. Schultz, MD; Vladimir Semenenko, PhD; Patrick Tripp, MD; Dian Wang, MD, PhD; Julia R. White, MD; and J. Frank Wilson, MD.

“Receiving this important accreditation confirms the high standard of radiation oncology treatment we provide at St. Joseph’s Hospital and all of the other sites served by the Medical College radiation oncology practice,” said J. Frank Wilson, MD, radiation oncologist and director of Froedtert & The Medical College Adult Clinical Cancer Services. “ACR accreditation is a widely recognized measure of quality care.” Dr. Wilson is chairman and the Bernard and Miriam Peck Family Professor of Radiation Oncology.

The Medical College of Wisconsin radiation oncology practice also serves Froedtert Hospital, Milwaukee; Community Memorial Hospital, Menomonee Falls; Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, Milwaukee; and St. Catherine’s Hospital, Kenosha. The ACR review is conducted by board-certified radiation oncologists and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Both staff and equipment are evaluated to ensure they are fully qualified to provide safe, high-quality radiation therapy treatments. Receiving the accreditation means a radiation oncology facility has met the challenge of a rigorous independent review and follows nationally accepted standards of care.
