Dr. Alonzo Walker Honored for Leadership in Breast Cancer
Milwaukee, Wis. (March 21, 2011) — A breast cancer specialist who has dedicated his 30-year career to treatment, research and education about the disease is one of six people honored by Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation with a Champion in Women’s Health Award. Alonzo P. Walker, MD, director of Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin breast care program, is being recognized for his tireless advocacy of breast health education, cancer detection and treatment, particularly for underserved women. Dr. Walker also is chief of the division of general surgery and a professor of surgery at The Medical College.
Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation founder and president Sue Ann Thompson will present the awards at a reception May 7 at the Madison Club. The Champions in Women’s Health awards are given to individuals who are instrumental in raising awareness of women’s health issues, expanding the base of knowledge about women’s health through their work and influencing the quality of health care for Wisconsin women.
Dr. Walker long has championed the cause of women’s health. He is a compassionate and caring physician, a nationally acknowledged breast cancer expert teaching the next generation of physicians, and a deeply engaged community leader working to bring quality breast health care to women. He led the development of Froedtert & The Medical College Breast Care Center and has served as its director since 1996. Under his guidance and in cooperation with community groups, Froedtert & The Medical College have implemented targeted community outreach programs about breast health for women living in Milwaukee’s central city. In 2010 alone, these programs reached more than 4,000 women.
Actively involved in clinical research to advance breast cancer treatment, Dr. Walker serves as the Medical College of Wisconsin’s principal investigator for clinical trials sponsored by the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project, a nationally recognized clinical cooperative group supported by the National Cancer Institute. He has presented at more than 70 invited lectures, workshops and conferences and has written extensively about breast cancer for peer-reviewed journals and books. He is former state chair of the cancer liaison program for the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and has served as an advisor to many breast cancer organizations.
