J. Frank Wilson, MD, Chosen for 2008 Smallwood Award
Milwaukee, WI (July 18, 2008) — Radiation oncologist J. Frank Wilson, MD, FACR, has been awarded the Thomas L. Smallwood Award for Patient Care Excellence by the board of directors of Froedtert Hospital. Chairman and Bernard & Miriam Peck Family Professor of Radiation Oncology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Dr. Wilson practices at Froedtert Hospital, where he specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients.
Nominated by his Froedtert & the Medical College peers, Dr. Wilson was cited for his keen clinical skills, his compassionate and sensitive approach to patient care and his leadership in setting a standard of excellence in cancer care for the organization. He was instrumental in planning the new Froedtert & the Medical College Clinical Cancer Center, which opened in May.
A nationally recognized specialist in radiation oncology, Dr. Wilson joined the Medical College faculty in 1974 and has chaired its Radiation Oncology Department since 1985. He has held leadership positions in virtually every national and international organization related to the field of radiation oncology, and since 2001 has served as principal investigator in the Patterns of Care study, a benchmark project funded by the National Cancer Institute. In 2006, he received the American College of Radiology’s Gold Medal Award, its highest honor.

The Thomas L. Smallwood Award was established in 2003 to honor outstanding contributions to the care of patients at Froedtert Hospital. Award criteria focus on four key areas: clinical skills, scientific inquiry, clinical program development and superior patient outcomes. The award is named for Thomas L. Smallwood, former chairman of the Froedtert Hospital board of directors and a passionate advocate for Froedtert Hospital and its patients.
