Froedtert Wins Volunteer Center Award

Milwaukee, WI (April 24, 2009) — Froedtert Hospital is the first hospital to win the Volunteer Center of Milwaukee’s “Inspire by Example” business award.

The Froedtert Hospital Community Service Program is a two-year-old program that connects Froedtert staff members with community organizations that need volunteer help. Program activities have included staffing free health clinics, completing home repairs for the elderly, working on a Habitat for Humanity home, providing health screenings at health fairs and serving as literacy tutors.

Among its successes, the service program put together a team to assist Literacy Services of Wisconsin. In 2008, the team provided 169 hours tutoring adults in reading and writing, English as a second language and General Educational Development (GED) preparation.

“Because of the overwhelmingly positive response from staff and beneficiary organizations, the service program has been successful well beyond what was imagined by the small group of visionary leaders who championed the idea,” said Carla Washington, community partnerships manager for Froedtert Hospital.

Froedtert was honored for promoting, encouraging and supporting employee volunteerism at the 27th annual Volunteer Awards luncheon on Thursday, April 23. The hospital joins past business winners such as Johnson Controls, Manpower, Northwestern Mutual, Kohl’s Department Stores and Metavante.
