Dr. Anne Hoch Named Champion in Women's Health

Milwaukee, WI (March 17, 2009) — Anne Hoch, DO, has been named a 2009 Champion in Women’s Health award winner by the Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation (WWHF).

THochhe Champions in Women’s Health Award honors individuals who have demonstrated exemplary leadership and devoted themselves to improving the quality of life for women and families. Award winners are nominated by their peers and honored at a private reception during the weekend of WWHF’s Spring Gala event in May. Hoch won the award for her work in the area of osteoporosis.

Dr. Hoch is the director of the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Women’s Sports Medicine Program and an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Medical College.

“Anne has made substantial scientific advancements in the field of orthopaedics that will impact women for many years to come,” said Jeffrey Schwab, MD, professor and chairman of orthopaedic surgery at Froedtert & The Medical College. “Her recent discoveries in the female athlete triad and the risks of osteoporosis in sedentary high school girls are transforming the care physicians are providing across the country.”

The condition known as the female athlete triad is a combination of three conditions — low energy availability, menstrual abnormalities and low bone mineral density — that often leads to the same steroid and hormonal profiles as postmenopausal women. In 2007, Hoch conducted a landmark study that showed sedentary high school girls are even more at risk for future osteoporosis than their athletic counterparts.

Established in 1997 by Former Wisconsin First Lady Sue Ann Thompson, the Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation is a statewide nonprofit in Wisconsin dedicated solely to improving the health and lives of women and their families through education, outreach programs and partnerships.
