Free Prostate Cancer Screenings to Be Offered at Miller Park

Milwaukee, Wis. (May 1, 2013) — Marking six years of collaboration, Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin, Fox 6, the Milwaukee Brewers and ZERO-Prostate Cancer Testing are again joining together to encourage men to protect themselves against prostate cancer.

Set for Wednesday, May 29 (rain or shine), from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Miller Park, the free, private screenings will be provided in two mobile clinic vehicles in the stadium parking lot, near the Home Plate Gate entrance at the northwest corner of the ballpark.

No appointment is necessary. Exams will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. The first 250 men who complete the screening will receive a voucher good for two tickets to a future Milwaukee Brewers home game.

Statistics show one in every six men will develop prostate cancer. The good news is that with early detection, prostate cancer is highly curable.

“If you’re over 40, getting checked is a simple step that could save your life,” said William See, MD, prostate cancer specialist with Froedtert & The Medical College Prostate and Urologic Cancer Program. “For all men, the risk of prostate cancer goes up at age 55. For African-American men and those with risk factors such as a family history, the risk elevates at age 40.”

The exam involves a blood test to measure the amount of prostate specific antigen, or PSA, in the blood and a physical examination of the prostate gland. The PSA test is the most widely available test to identify changes in the prostate that may indicate disease.

Participants will know the results of their physical exam immediately; PSA test results will be mailed within four weeks. All results are confidential. Because there are risks and benefits associated with prostate cancer screening, men are encouraged to talk with their physicians about whether and when screening is appropriate.

Exams will be performed by Medical College of Wisconsin physicians and other clinical experts from Froedtert & The Medical College. The exam takes approximately 20 minutes; wait times will depend on demand. Fasting is not necessary. Men should eat before arriving and stay well-hydrated.

The screenings will be conducted in two 39-foot clinic vehicles operated by ZERO and two rooms inside Miller Park stadium. These venues provide a comfortable, private environment. Support from donors to the Froedtert Hospital Foundation helped secure the second clinic vehicle for the event.

Nearly 700 men were screened at the last event. More than 8 percent had abnormal PSA results and about 5 percent had abnormal physical prostate exam results. In the five years the free event has been held, more than 2,700 men have been screened—many of them for the first time.

The information, compiled by Best Doctors Inc. includes more physicians from MCW than any other group practice or institution in Wisconsin.

MCW physicians account for over 44 percent of the 1,035 Wisconsin physicians listed in this year’s database. More Best Doctors practice at MCW’s major teaching hospital affiliates, Froedtert Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, than at any other hospitals in the state.

(Feb. 25, 2013) — Truven Health Analytics, formerly the health care business of Thomson Reuters, listed Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin on its 2013 100 Top Hospitals list. The hospital was one of 15 Major Teaching Hospitals named on a list that segments hospitals by: Major Teaching Hospitals, Teaching Hospitals, and Large, Medium and Small Community Hospitals.

Froedtert & The Medical College combine the strengths of Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College in an academic medical center that delivers advanced medical care. The hospital is the only hospital to be ranked in Southeastern Wisconsin, and one of four ranked in Wisconsin.

The national rankings have been annually published for more than 20 years, most recently by Modern Healthcare. Of the nearly 3,000 hospitals evaluated, only 100 performed well enough to rank nationally.

“This year’s winners have brought even higher value to their local communities – better quality, higher efficiency and high patient perceptions of care, while confronting the challenges of massive industry-wide transformation to implement health care reform,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president at Truven Health Analytics.

The Truven Health rankings evaluate performance in 10 areas: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average patient stay, expenses, profitability, patient satisfaction, adherence to clinical standards of care, post-discharge mortality, and readmission rates for heart attacks, heart failure and pneumonia.

“Quality is at the core of who we are and drives what we do,” said Cathy Buck, president of Froedtert Hospital. “This recognition is a testament to the diligent work of our staff and physicians across our organization as they continually strive for excellence in caring for patients.”

Truven reports that 100 Top Hospitals outperform their peers by demonstrating excellence and operating effectively across all functional areas. Based on comparisons between the study winners and a peer group of similar high volume hospitals that were not winners, they found that if all hospitals performed at the level of this year’s winners:

More than 164,000 additional lives could be saved.
Nearly 82,000 additional patients could be complication free.
$6 billion could be saved.
Typical patient could be released from the hospital half a day sooner.

This analysis is based on Medicare patients. If the same standards were applied to all inpatients, the impact would be greater.

Milwaukee, Wis. (Feb. 1, 2013) — Froedtert Health was named one of America’s Top Workplaces by WorkplaceDynamics. Froedtert Health ranked No. 47 nationwide among 872 organizations with more than 1,000 employees who participated in regional top workplaces programs.

The National Top Workplaces list was determined solely by feedback gathered through an objective employee survey. The survey was conducted by WorkplaceDynamics, LLP, the leading on-demand employee survey provider, in conjunction with 30 leading publishers across the United States.

Froedtert Health and Medical College of Wisconsin Form New Physician Practice Partnership

Milwaukee, Wis. (Feb. 8, 2013) — Froedtert Health and the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) have agreed on plans for a joint clinical practice group to serve patients at both organizations’ community clinics. The new organization will be called Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Community Physicians.

The joint clinical practice group agreement covers seven counties (Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington, Waukesha, Racine, Kenosha and Walworth) and includes more than 30 community clinics operated by both organizations. In fiscal 2012, over 250 physicians practiced at these clinics and combined patient visits exceeded 710,000.

According to Catherine Jacobson, president and chief executive officer of Froedtert Health, the agreement will bring the Froedtert Health primary care and specialty physicians currently practicing in the community setting into an integrated practice model. This integrated practice will be linked to MCW physicians practicing on the academic medical center campus in Wauwatosa and in the community through shared quality and service standards.

“Froedtert Health and MCW have been discussing ways to create an enduring economically, operationally and clinically aligned approach to providing care in the community,” Jacobson said. “This new structure aims at achieving a high performing off-campus patient care model to deliver value across the continuum of care, including enabling easy connections to the academic medical center as needed.”

John R. Raymond, Sr., MD, MCW’s president and chief executive officer, said, “One of the goals of this plan is to continue to build on the community-academic partnership between our two organizations that is unique in the region. To the benefit of our patients, we will be able to clinically integrate, sharing the same electronic health record and evidence-based medical protocols plus access to academic medical center expertise.”

Mark Lodes, MD, was named president of Froedtert & The Medical College Community Physicians. Dr. Lodes, who currently serves as chief medical officer of the Froedtert & The Medical College Clinical Ventures Group, has been instrumental in developing and managing the organizations’ off-campus clinic initiatives since 2004. The effort focused on providing convenient access to MCW physicians in a less costly environment than the academic medical center. Dr. Lodes led the development of four new clinic sites, bringing the total Froedtert & The Medical College off-campus primary care clinics to eight. Board certified in internal medicine and pediatrics, Dr. Lodes also is a practicing physician. He completed residency training at MCW, where he earned his medical degree in 1997.

An eight-person board of directors will provide oversight of the new organization with Froedtert Health and MCW appointing four members each and Dr. Lodes serving as an ex-officio member of the board.

“This agreement is just the beginning. Many decisions will be made in the next six months to create the organization and its structure. A physician leadership council will be instrumental in providing guidance as we continue to move forward,” said Dr. Lodes. “Our patient-centric care model uses data-driven best practice methods and aims to provide great value to our patients by delivering appropriate, timely care in the most cost-effective setting,” said Lodes.
