Froedtert & The Medical College in Top 10 US Academic Medical Centers

Milwaukee, WI (October 13, 2009) – Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin rank in the nation’s top 10 in a nationally recognized scorecard measuring the quality of major academic medical centers.

Conducted annually, the review by the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) assesses the performance of its academic medical center members in areas considered essential to providing high-quality care. Approximately 70 quality metrics are used to analyze performance in areas ranging from mortality and readmission rates to how patients evaluate their experience at the hospital.

“This recognition reflects an academic medical center that steps up to one of its essential missions: providing excellent patient care in a collaborative, cohesive model,” said John A. Weigelt, MD, medical director of clinical quality for Froedtert & The Medical College.

Measures in the scorecard were based on the safety, timeliness, efficiency, effectiveness, equity and the “patient centeredness” of care. These areas all reflect the National Institute of Medicine’s six aims for improving healthcare.

Based in Oak Brook, Ill., the University HealthSystem Consortium is an alliance of 103 academic medical centers and 219 of their affiliated hospitals, representing more than 90 percent of the nation’s nonprofit academic medical centers. UHC provides data and services to members to support clinical, operational, financial and supply chain improvement.
