Comprehensive Care for Patients with Blood Disease

Benign hematology encompasses a large number of inherited and acquired blood diseases. Many blood disorders are relatively mild, but some are challenging chronic conditions. All require accurate diagnosis and careful management. The Benign Hematology Program at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin includes nationally and internationally recognized physicians with expertise in the care and treatment of blood diseases.

The team is comprised of Medical College of Wisconsin physicians, as well as the physicians of BloodCenter of Wisconsin and its Comprehensive Center for Bleeding Disorders. All work closely together, bringing in additional expertise from Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin as needed to evaluate, manage and treat patients who have blood diseases.

The physicians in the Benign Hematology Program have advanced training in the treatment of bleeding disorders, clotting disorders and other hematologic problems. Each physician focuses on a specific set of blood disorders and has experience addressing the unique challenges of particular diseases. Staff members also have expertise in the laboratory science that is critical to blood disease diagnosis and treatment planning. Patient Support

The diagnosis of a blood disease raises many questions and concerns. The Benign Hematology Program is designed to provide patients and their families with the help and support they need. Physicians and nurses in the program focus on making patients feel at ease, know they are understood and fully equipped to meet their health challenges. Patients also have access to a full range of support services.

Close Collaboration With BloodCenter of Wisconsin

The Benign Hematology Program maintains a close working relationship with BloodCenter of Wisconsin. BloodCenter provides many blood clotting factors that are key to the treatment of patients with bleeding disorders. BloodCenter’s Hemostasis Reference Laboratory provides comprehensive diagnostic testing for bleeding, clotting and platelet function disorders and many rare blood conditions. BloodCenter’s Platelet and Neutrophil Immunology laboratory provides diagnostic testing for suspected immune thrombocytopenic and neutropenic disorders.

Anticoagulation Clinic

Patients on blood thinners receive ongoing medication management through the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Anticoagulation Clinic. Pharmacists in the clinic carefully monitor patient blood tests and adjust medication doses accordingly. The Anticoagulation Clinic is located in the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Specialty Clinics building.

Blood and Marrow Transplant

Some blood diseases can be treated with a blood and marrow transplant (BMT), an advanced therapy that uses blood stem cells collected from a donor. The Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin was one of the first BMT programs in the U.S. It is the largest transplant program in Wisconsin.

Clinical Trials and Research

Members of the Benign Hematology Program are actively involved in researching the causes of blood diseases and new treatment strategies. They are leaders in several national investigations and government-sponsored initiatives. Patients benefit by receiving the most up-to-date care and direct access to many investigational treatments. Patients in the Benign Hematology Program see all their physicians and nurses in the “Life” Quadrant of the Clinical Cancer Center. Please note: Receiving care in the Clinical Cancer Center does not mean that you have cancer. Benign hematology patients are seen in our cancer center because it has all the resources hematologists need to provide an accurate diagnosis and devise an effective treatment plan.
