What options are available to me during my labor and birth experience? Comfort measures such as showers, whirlpool tubs, birthing balls, glider chairs and CD players are available. An epidural may be an option for pain.
Is there an anesthesiologist available at all times?Anesthesiologists are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for pain management, as well as to assist your physician should you experience a complication during your labor.

Will my baby be able to remain in my room with me? We encourage babies to remain with mom as much as possible to promote bonding and breastfeeding. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all breastfeeding babies spend time skin-to-skin right after birth. Skin-to-skin means your baby is tummy down directly on your chest. We support this practice beginning immediately after delivery if possible.
How many support people can I have with me during labor? During labor, visitors are limited to the family members or friends who will actively support you during the birth of your baby. Children younger than 18 years of age are not allowed in Labor and Delivery.
Is my significant other allowed to stay overnight? Your significant other must be 18 years of age to spend the night; however, exceptions will be made for the father of the baby during labor.
Is the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconson Birth Center a safe place for my baby? Our Birth Center is a secure unit. Patients, visitors and staff enter through doors that require each person to be identified prior to permitting entrance. Identification bands are placed on baby, mother and the identified support person immediately after delivery. Shortly after transfer to the Mother Baby unit, security bands are placed on your baby that will alarm if your baby should be taken through any door in the Birth Center.
Am I in a good place should I experience a complication during my labor and/or birth? Our board-certified obstetrician/gynecologists, many of whom have additional training in maternal-fetal medicine, handle more than 1,800 births each year. Our highly specialized labor and delivery nursing staff is also prepared to handle all facets of your experience. We have specialized programs to help you during pregnancy and after the birth of a child with a diagnosed birth defect, such as Down’s Syndrome or spina bifida. We have a level 2 special care nursery to meet the needs of babies who need extra monitoring or supportive care.
Additionally, the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Birth Center is located within Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, so you and your child will be in close proximity to the Children’s Hospital state-of-the- art neonatal intensive care unit should specialized care be needed immediately after the birth of your baby.
Are childbirth classes available?Whether you are expecting your first child or have experienced birth before, each delivery is a little different. You may have questions or concerns. Our childbirth classes provide a forum for you to learn from our certified experts, get reliable feedback, ask questions and keep the lines of communication open with your partner as you share the intimate process of pregnancy and birth. Our childbirth series teaches about the process and expectations of labor and delivery, role of the labor coach and how to care for a newborn. Do you provide tours of the Birth Center?Yes, we offer scheduled tours of the Birth Center. During the tour, you will have the chance to meet key staff members.
