Blood and Marrow Transplant Program

Highlights

Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin are a regional and national leader in blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) and home to an international BMT research center.

Top Doctors

Mary Horowitz, MD, MS, Medical College of Wisconsin medical oncologist, has been honored as a Woman of Influence by the Milwaukee Business Journal. This award honors "remarkable women in the Milwaukee-area business community who are making a difference on a daily basis."   Dr. Mary Horowitz
Dr. Horowitz

Five physicians in the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program — Timothy Fenske, MD, MS; Parameswaran Hari, MD, MRCP; James D. Rizzo, MD; Dr. Horowitz, and William Drobyski, MD — have been named to the Best Doctors® in America list.

FACT Accreditation

The Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) has awarded a three-year re-accreditation to The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) program for pediatric and adult autologous and allogeneic transplantation at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and Froedtert Hospital.

The BMT program is a combined effort of the Medical College, Children’s Hospital, Froedtert Hospital, and BloodCenter and has been continuously accredited by FACT since 2001.

Regional and National Leadership

The Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin BMT Program performs more blood and marrow transplants per year than any other hospital in Wisconsin. It is also the only center in southeastern Wisconsin that provides allogeneic and autologous transplants and mini-transplants. In 1996, we became only the third institution in the nation to perform blood and marrow transplants for patients with severe multiple sclerosis.

A Pioneer in Donor Transplants

The Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin BMT Program is widely recognized for its pioneering efforts in donor (or allogeneic) transplants. We have received particular attention for our work in T-cell depletion, a technique that helps reduce transplant risks and makes BMT an option for a greater number of people.

International Research Center

Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin are home to the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR). Using the world’s largest database of blood and marrow transplant outcomes, the CIBMTR identifies successful transplant strategies. The center is also active in the design and implementation of clinical studies. Mary Horowitz, MD, MS, serves as scientific director of the CIBMTR.

Get Involved
