Clinical Cancer Center Will Debut Epic System

When the Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center opens on May 19, physicians and staff will not just be working in a new building. They will also be using a new electronic medical record for all cancer patients.

The Epic electronic medical record system is already in place at several outpatient clinics at Froedtert & the Medical College. The Clinical Cancer Center will use a version of Epic known as Epic HSD that provides functionalities suited to hospital service departments.

Electronic medical record systems help healthcare organizations provide greater continuity of care. This is especially important for cancer patients, who typically receive care from several different physicians and services. Epic HSD allows all physicians and nurses to document a patient’s information in a single record. Caregivers will be able to use Epic HSD to view all components of a patient’s record, including every consultation, treatment and test result. At the Froedtert & the Medical College Clinical Cancer Center, physicians and other caregivers will already streamline cancer care by seeing patients in a single location. Having access to the Epic patient record view will further enhance coordination of care.

The Epic HSD system has been customized for the Clinical Cancer Center. Tailored to the unique workflows of several departments, the system is designed to meet the needs of physicians and staff across the entire spectrum of cancer care and treatment.
