The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Palliative Care Program was established in 1993 as the first program of its kind in Wisconsin. It remains the only such program in the state that combines clinical care, health professional education, community outreach and efforts toward institutional change – all aimed at improving care for the dying.

By concentrating on the patient and family as a unit, we are better able to help manage distressing physical and emotional symptoms. David Weissman, MD, recognized for his pioneering work in end-of-life medical education, heads our exceptional staff. Dr. Weissman is a consultant to the Center to Advance Palliative Care and numerous medical schools, helping to develop palliative care teaching resources for the next generation of physicians. The Palliative Care Program has earned the support of local and national grant-making institutions, including the National Cancer Institute, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, JEHT Foundation, YC Ho Helen and Michael Chiang Foundation, Kenneth B. Schwartz Center, and Retirement Research Foundation. In response to intense national interest in improving end-of-life care, the Palliative Care Program has expanded its educational and clinical care services to better serve southeastern Wisconsin and beyond.
