Support Services

Cancer patients have multifaceted support care needs. The Clinical Cancer Center provides a full range of support services that address the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of patients and their families.

The Jeffrey C. Siegel Quality of Life Center

Our innovative Jeffrey C. Siegel Quality of Life Center, named in memory of an individual whose generous family helped make it possible, is located on the second floor of the Clinical Cancer Center, next to the Interdisciplinary Cancer Clinics. Patients and family members can schedule an appointment or drop in for a variety of important support services.

  • Psych-oncology nursing. Advanced practice nurses provide counseling to cancer patients and can prescribe medications.

  • Registered dietitians. Nutrition experts who assess and recommend solutions to nutrition problems, create customized eating plans, and support cancer patients in maintaining better health throughout treatment and recovery.

  • Complementary medicine. Patients can explore a variety of non-traditional health services that have proven effective in supporting cancer treatment.

  • Social workers. Trained professionals who help cancer patients access community and other resources to get the support they need.

  • Financial counselors. Skilled professionals who help patients and family members navigate their financial options.

  • Chaplains. Individuals and families can seek spiritual support and counseling from hospital chaplains who focus on cancer patients.

  • Cancer Genetic Counselors. Specially trained and certified professionals who help patients, family members and others understand their risk of experiencing an inherited form of cancer.

The Quality of Life Center also houses offices for our world-renowned Palliative Care Program for patients facing terminal illness.

Small Stones Wellness Center

Many cancer patients experience changes in their personal appearance. Hair loss, mastectomy and other issues can add to the burden of disease and treatment.

The Small Stones Wellness Center supports the healing process by helping men and women enhance their appearance, promote relaxation and boost self-esteem. Lean more about the Small Stones Wellness Center.

Cancer Rehabilitation Gym

Many cancer patients have specific physical therapy and rehabilitation needs. The Clinical Cancer Center includes a small gym and several private treatment rooms for onsite rehabilitation therapy. Specialized physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians and therapists use these facilities to help patients overcome the effects of cancer and recover from treatment.

Cancer Support Groups

Patients receiving treatment at the Clinical Cancer Center can join several different groups that provide emotional and social support. Options include groups for people with lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, brain tumors, blood-related cancers and other cancer diseases.

Learn more about support groups available at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin.

Child Life Services

A child life specialist is a certified professional who uses developmental, educational and therapeutic interventions to help children cope with illness and hospitalization. Our child life specialist uses her knowledge of child development to educate, prepare and support children during the adult’s hospital stay.

On the Move: A Walking Program for Our Cancer Patients

When you’re going through cancer treatment (chemotherapy, radiation therapy) it’s common to experience fatigue and a feeling of low energy that can impact quality of life. However, We’ve found that staying active can help you feel better and improve your mood and general outlook.

At Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin, we’ve developed a special walking program just for our cancer patients called On the Move. A walking track is clearly marked on the second floor of the Clinical Cancer Center and winds around the perimeter near the windows, (excluding the Bistro) so our patients can enjoy natural views as they walk. When you’ve completed five laps, you’ll have walked an entire mile. There are benches along the path, so you can sit down and rest any time you need a break.

If you are a cancer patient at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin and would like to participate in On the Move, please talk with your cancer nurse. Your nurse will review your situation to determine if using the walking path is appropriate for you. We ask that if you’re feeling weak, dizzy or you have a fever on a particular day, please don’t walk – rest instead. The walking path is available any time you are at the Clinical Cancer Center for an appointment. We hope you’ll enjoy this opportunity to maintain strength and refresh your outlook, as we help you stay “on the move.”

If you have questions or would like a brochure (includes a map of the walking path), please be sure to ask your nurse.

On the Move is supported through generous donors to the Froedtert Hospital Foundation.
