Why should I seek care for vein disease at an academic medical center?

When considering treatment for a vein problem, it’s important to seek care with physicians specifically trained in vein disorders. Diagnosis and treatment of vein disease requires extensive knowledge and familiarity with a variety of methods for providing the optimal care.

The physicians of the Comprehensive Vein Clinic combine their expertise in vascular surgery and interventional radiology to meet the unique needs of each patient. As a team, they provide complete treatment, from the smallest spider veins to the largest varicose veins.

In addition, our team members often treat patients who have other health problems unrelated to their vein disorder. These include heart disease, diabetes and kidney disease. Our physicians work closely with a variety of specialists at Froedtert & The Medical College and with patients’ physicians to ensure coordinated care.

Are there any risks or complications associated with vein treatment?

As with any medical intervention, vein treatment involves potential side effects and complications. While these are uncommon, each patient should consult with his or her physician to determine if their condition presents any special risks and to understand the potential complications of a recommended treatment.

Who is a candidate for vein treatment?

Any person who has unsightly spider or varicose veins is a candidate. The best results with spider veins are seen in fair-skinned people.

Will health insurance cover vein treatment?

Treatment of spider veins is often considered “cosmetic” and may not be covered by your health insurance. However, the diagnosis and treatment of significant health problems due to diseased veins are covered by most insurance companies if the problem is deemed “medically necessary.” An initial evaluation will be done to determine if your vein disorder is causing health problems or if it is strictly cosmetic. Please check your individual coverage with your insurance provider.

What if my health insurance company won’t cover the treatment?

We will provide an estimate of service fees to you after your initial evaluation. The estimated fee for any procedure will be due at least 10 days before the scheduled procedure. Any additional fees will be billed after receiving scheduled services.
