Diagnosing Ear Problems

Getting the proper treatment for your ear-related problem begins with proper diagnosis. The specialists at the Ear, Nose and Throat Program (Otolaryngology) at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin combine their collective expertise with cutting-edge diagnostic procedures to determine what’s causing your problem.

Comprehensive Assessment

We want to gather as much information as possible about your ear condition. That’s why your initial assessment will include a thorough medical history, a comprehensive physical examination of your ears and assessment of your hearing, balance and ability to function within your daily life.

Diagnostic Tests

Tests that may be ordered to obtain additional information about your ears include:

Hearing tests. Different hearing tests may be administered to determine how well your ears are hearing. Some tests may require you to indicate if/when you hear a sound, while others measure your brain response to sound stimulation. These tests will help your doctor understand what sounds, if any, you’re having difficulty hearing. Hearing test results are charted on an audiogram, a graph that shows how loud sounds are that you hear and how well you hear various pitches.

Balance Tests (“vestibular function” tests). If you’re experiencing dizziness, we can use a variety of balance tests to assess your inner ear balance system, or vestibular system. We also want to know how your dizziness is affecting your life, so specially trained therapists will ask you to perform various tasks and movements so we can see how your dizziness affects your function.

Imaging studies. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT scans) may be used to look inside the ear and head to identify non-cancerous tumors, called acoustic neuromas, that may impact hearing and balance.

Hearing Aid Evaluations

The Koss Hearing and Balance Center at Froedtert also offers comprehensive hearing aid evaluations. Not sure if you’re hearing aid is working effectively? Schedule an appointment for a hearing aid test today by calling 414-805-3666 or 800-272-3666.
